GLC Projects is pleased to announce the successful completion of the demolition of Bridge House in Sunderland, carried out on behalf of Sunderland City Council.
The three-story building, located opposite the Wearmouth Bridge in the heart of the city, presented several challenges due to its complex city centre location and proximity to surrounding infrastructure, including a neighbouring subway and a Grade II listed church. Careful planning and controlled dismantling methods were required throughout, particularly to protect the Northern Power Grid substation attached to the structure.
Our team worked under strict safety controls, with traffic management and logistics carefully planned to minimise disruption in this busy part of Sunderland. The project began during a period of exceptionally high footfall, coinciding with Sunderland AFC’s promotion to the premier league, the play-off matches, and the Woman’s Rugby World Cup hosted at the stadium of light – all taking place just one mile from the site along a major pedestrian route to the stadium. This required additional traffic management measures, timed deliveries, and close liaison with the Council and local community to maintain safe pedestrian and vehicle access at all times.
By combining our in-house expertise, modern plant, and close coordination with key stakeholders, we ensured the safe and efficient delivery of the project, keeping the programme on track at every stage.
Supporting Sunderland’s Regeneration
The completion of Bridge House marks an important step forward for the regeneration of Sunderland. By clearing the site, Sunderland City Council is paving the way for future development opportunities that will bring long-term benefits to the local community, including the potential for new facilities, investment, and jobs.
We are proud to have contributed to this wider vision, providing enabling works that support growth and create space for positive change in the city centre. Projects like this highlight the role demolition plays not just in removing structures, but in creating opportunities for transformation and renewal.
Partnership with Sunderland City Council
We would like to thank Sunderland City Council for entrusting GLC Projects with this important scheme. Their commitment to regeneration and community development has been clear throughout, and we are delighted to have delivered this project safely and efficiently, helping to unlock the site’s potential for the future.
