Careful City Centre Demolition: Bridge House, Sunderland

At GLC Projects, we’re proud to be working with Sunderland City Council on the safe, complex demolition of Bridge House, a three-storey structure in the heart of Sunderland city centre. This project demonstrates our expertise in managing careful city-centre dismantling, complex logistics, and protecting critical infrastructure.

Supporting Sunderland’s Regeneration

Bridge House sits in a prominent position opposite the Wearmouth Bridge and plays a key role in the wider regeneration of Sunderland city centre. Once cleared, the site will be ready for future development, supporting the Council’s vision for new investment and opportunities.

As Principal Contractor, we’re responsible for delivering this project safely, efficiently and with minimum disruption for local residents and businesses.

Protecting Live Infrastructure

One of the defining challenges of this project is the Northern Power Grid substation which is directly connected to Bridge House. This live electrical infrastructure must remain fully operational throughout the works.

We have developed a detailed method for carefully dismantling structural elements around the substation to prevent damage or disruption to local power supplies. Protection measures, clear separation of work areas and constant supervision ensure the safety of the asset and the public at all times.

Complex Logistics in a Busy City Centre

Demolishing a multi-storey building in a dense city-centre location demands precise planning and excellent stakeholder communication. We’ve developed comprehensive traffic and logistics plans, including temporary road closures and delivery schedules agreed with Sunderland City Council, to minimise disruption to traffic, pedestrians and nearby businesses.

Waste is being handled and removed responsibly, with materials segregated on site to maximise recycling and reduce landfill. Our team uses modern demolition equipment and safe working practices to deliver the works efficiently within tight site boundaries.

Clear Communication with the Local Community

Bridge House sits close to residential properties and commercial premises. Maintaining good relationships and clear communication is vital. Our team provides regular updates to Sunderland City Council and local stakeholders, explaining what to expect as the works progress.

We have implemented robust dust suppression and noise control measures, helping to minimise any impact on surrounding areas and keep the environment safe and clean for local residents and businesses.

Setting the Stage for Future Growth

This project shows how GLC Projects delivers complex city-centre demolition safely, while protecting live services and working closely with local partners. Our work at Bridge House will help unlock the site’s potential for new development, contributing to Sunderland’s transformation and growth.

By combining careful dismantling, tight logistical controls, and proactive stakeholder engagement, GLC Projects continues to prove why we’re a trusted enabling works contractor for local authorities across the North East.
