GLC Projects were the specialist demolition contractor for the demolition of large 3 sheds, and a 50ft lighting tower at PD Ports in Hartlepool as part of an HS2 precast concrete segment factory for Strabag.

The main works included complete removal of over 2,500m2 of industrial sheds over 3 buildings working in close proximity to live port infrastructure and other construction works. In addition, the works included the careful dismantling of an 20m wide hydraulic door while working within a narrow 3m space and the controlled collapse of a 50ft lighting tower adjacent to the boundary of the site. As part of the works, the GLC Projects team also removed asbestos from redundant industrial pipework and provided a watching brief during the disposal of contaminated soils.

The demolition works were carried out carefully to allow adjacent construction works to take place. The buildings which were a mix of steel portal frames, were clad in both brick and insulated cladding. All waste materials were segregated to maximise the recycling potential. As part of the works over 280t of scrap metal was recovered, with only 20t of waste was removed to landfill. In addition, almost 3t of asbestos was responsibly disposed to a licensed facility.

The works which were delivered over several visits and included a number of variations during the project, were delivered safely while working adjacent to the site boundary and other operational buildings on the site.
