GLC Projects were appointed as the specialist demolition contractor for the works which included internal stripout and careful dismantling and foundation removal of a steel-framed prefabricated modular building. Due to the immediate adjacency of the Accident & Emergency entrance, vehicle access was limited and there was no space for storage of skips on site.

To mitigate any interference with the ambulance route, the demolition team removed all waste from site using a caged tipper vehicle. This could be safely and quickly manoeuvred on site and loaded with waste by hand, before being transported off site for disposal. This approach ensured access was maintained through the hospital at all times and there was no adverse impact on the normal operation of the hospital.

The building was also positioned next to the main plant room and air intake system for the hospital ventilation and oxygen system. To protect the system from dust, the building was dismantled in a controlled manner by hand to prevent any adverse dust generation. In addition, the building was regularly sprayed with a water-based adhesive solution, to not only suppress any air-borne dust, but also prevent the release of dust particles from the building in the first instance. To ensure compliance with the agreed measures, regular site audits were carried out by GLC Projects and the hospital infection control team.

The works which were completed in April 2021 were delivered safely and without incident or interference with the normal operation of the hospital. The demolition team were also pleased to report, the programme was met and the works were delivered within budget.
