GLC Projects were the specialist demolition contractor for the demolition and asbestos removal of an office building and old bus depot shed as part of a wider development project at the Northern School of Art in Hartlepool.

The main works included extensive asbestos cladding removal, stripout and building demolition back to the original structural frame of a redundant office building. The demolition works were carried out carefully to ensure the original steel frame could be preserved for use in the new design. In addition, careful demolition was carried out to preserve the main electrical feed into the centre of the building which remained live throughout the works.

As part of the project, major internal demolition works were also carried out within an old bus depot shed. Internal walls and other structures were removed to create a single open space for further refurbishment for new art studios. The works included the careful demolition of internal walls and the removal of extensive pipework to an old fuel tank, stripout of all redundant electrical services, and dismantling of a number of large scale concertina doors and shutters. Furthermore, a large existing steel cantilever canopy was dismantled and removed while keeping the remaining roof structure intact.

The works which included a number of variations during the project, were delivered safely while working adjacent to the main school car park and other operations on the site.
